Some recommendations for hikes and day trips in South Tyrol are listed below.
> Rio delle Foglie gorge in Aldino: unique canyon at the foot of the Corno Bianco and Corno Nero, which can be walked on foot.
> Monte Corno nature park: paradise for hikers and cyclists with several possibilities to stop in cosy mountain huts.
> Passo Mendola in Caldaro: former health resort, today unique hiking and leisure paradise with wonderful viewpoints that make you admire the Dolomites, the Val d’Adige and the Bassa Atesina. The Mendola can be reached via a steep cable car starting from Caldaro.
> Ice holes in Appiano: after a rockfall, subterraneous holes were formed that leave space for air. Cool air exits the so-called ice holes, which create a micro climate which makes high alpine vegetation grow at 500 m asl.
> Pilgrimage site Pietralba in S. Pietro Monte in Nova Ponente. The most famous pilgrimage site with a great view on the Dolomites.
> Shopping city of Bolzano with its historic centre.
