Wine varieties

In the two wine-growing areas of the Oltradige and the Bassa Atesina a great variety of vines is cultivated

A large number of vine varieties is cultivated on a total surface of 1,682 hectares in the Oltradige area, that’s to say in Caldaro and Appiano, and on 1,872 hectares in the Bassa Atesina area with Termeno. They are processed into exquisite wines. The tradition of winegrowing and winemaking in South Tyrol dates back to ancient times.

This fact is documented by grape seeds and bronze vessels from the period around 1000 BC, excavated in the Bassa Atesina area. Also the Romans appreciated the surroundings of Lake Caldaro as a fertile wine-growing region. Today the historical residences of Caldaro (Kaltern) and Termeno (Tramin) remind on the long history: the viticulture of the Counts of Enzenberg (Manincor Residence), for instance, was documented already back in 1698.
