Pianizza di Sotto

Pianizza di Sotto (436 m a.s.l.), located directly along the South Tyrolean Wine Road, borders the village of Appiano

Slightly beneath Pianizza di Sopra there is Pianizza di Sotto (Unterplanitzing, in German) at 436 m a.s.l., located directly along the South Tyrolean Wine Road and at the village entrance of Caldaro. In ancient times it was called “Planities inferior”, that’s to say “lower plane slope terrace”, whereas Pianizza di Sopra was the “Planities superior”, the “upper plane slope terrace”.

Presumably, in ancient times the locality was the place of the junction with the trail to the Passo della Mendola mountain pass. The village centre is characterised today by the charming Gothic church dedicated to St. Leonard of Noblac from the 13th or 14th century. Inside there are still some beautiful frescoes dating back to 1360, depicting also the coat of arms of the Lords of Fuchs.

Also the popular Oltradige Cycle Track leads past Pianizza di Sotto. The 20 km long cycle route connects the city of Bolzano with the wine-growing area between Appiano and Caldaro. Located amidst the vast vineyard landscape, Pianizza di Sotto is a fascinating place at any time of year!
