At the west lakeside, directly at lake Caldaro, there is the small village of S. Giuseppe al Lago (214 m asl).

Located at the lakeside of Lake Caldaro and surrounded by typical South Tyrolean vineyards in the south of the province, there is the municipality of Caldaro. This area is characterised by a large number of castles, ruins and residences that are popular excursion destinations. The Mendola funicular, considered the steepest and longest funicular railway of Europe, takes you to the Passo della Mendola, which is an ideal starting point for hikes, making you experience nature at close range. -

This locality is not only the lowest located village of the municipality of Caldaro, but also the smallest. You have to overcome about 400 metres in altitude if you would like to walk from the lake to the highest locality of Caldaro, which is Castelvecchio.
The scattered settlement of San Giuseppe al Lago is a paradies for those who love water and sun. This is also where you can find a swimming pool as well as a large number of offers, like pedalo and paddle boat rental, a surf school and much more.
This region is surrounded by a protected area, a biotope, which can be explored when walking round the lake. About 14 information panels provide information about different animal species and their habitat.
