Hike to the Kalterer Höhe

This beautiful autumnal hike leads through colourful woods at the slope of the Mendola Ridge from San Michele to Caldaro

If you want to do this hike, we suggest you to check the weather and trail conditions in advance and on site before setting out.

From mid-October until the beginning of November the autumnal colouring of the deciduous forests reaches its zenith. The ideal time for a hike at the lower slope of the Mendola Ridge, through mixed forests dominated by beeches. We start our hike in the centre of San Michele Appiano (St. Michael Eppan) and follow the marker no. 8B. The first section of our route is also known as Way of the Cross which proceeds to the little Calvary Church.

We pass the church and walk further to the Steinegger Tavern, where the path no. 7 towards Matschatsch starts. The forest road takes us to the meadow clearings on the Monte Ganda hill where the Caldaro High Route (Kalterer Höhenweg) starts. We follow the markers no. 9 and 16 towards the Kalterer Höhe, and walk downhill, where the path crosses the Mendola Pass Road.

Exactly at lunch time we reach the Kalterer Höhe and take the opportunity to dine at the eponymous restaurant which is located at the junction to Caldaro. After our break we walk uphill to reach the Caldaro High Route again which we follow until the intermediate station of the Mendola Funicular. There the descent to Sant'Antonio (St. Anton) and the valley station of the funicular on path no. 9C starts. By public bus we come back to San Michele Appiano again.
