Lake Caldaro, the largest natural lake in South Tyrol, comprises a vast wetland area, which also represents a natural paradise that is included in the European network for protected areas "Natura 2002". The reeds at the south lakeside, which also belong to the protected area, represent a breeding and spawning ground for many fish, water insects, water birds and amphibians. Moreover scientists proved that more than 100 bird species live in this area. As the lake is located in the air route of a large number of birds, there are also species like cormorants, fish hawks, purple herons or common snipes.
In the biotope there is a small observation tower, from which you can perfectly observe the animals. Water pipit, bittern, ortolans, weeds, linnets, wrynecks, yellow wagtails, leaf warblers, scrays, mire crows and many more animals are living in this area.
